Description

Delicious danishes filled with a creamy strawberry filling, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons strawberry jam
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sugar, optional for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly flour your work surface and gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet.
  3. Roll the pastry just enough to smooth the seams and even out the thickness.
  4. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter or a knife to cut out heart shapes from the puff pastry.
  5. Place the pastry hearts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
  6. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  7. Add the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest, and mix until creamy and well combined.
  8. Fold in the finely chopped fresh strawberries and strawberry jam until evenly distributed.
  9. Using a small knife, lightly score a smaller heart inside each puff pastry heart, leaving about a ½-inch border.
  10. Prick the centers inside the scored heart a few times with a fork to keep them from puffing too much.
  11. Spoon a small mound of the strawberry cream cheese filling into the center of each heart, staying inside the scored border.
  12. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk or cream to make an egg wash.
  13. Brush the exposed pastry edges with the egg wash.
  14. Sprinkle the edges lightly with coarse sugar if using.
  15. Bake the danishes for 15–18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden and the filling is set.
  16. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the danishes cool for a few minutes.
  17. Transfer the danishes to a wire rack to cool slightly.
  18. Dust the tops with powdered sugar before serving.
  19. Serve warm or at room temperature.
  20. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently in the oven or air fryer.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh strawberries.
  • You can substitute the cream cheese with mascarpone for a different flavor.
