Description
Delicious danishes filled with a creamy strawberry filling, perfect for breakfast or dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons strawberry jam
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon milk or cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar, for dusting
- 1 teaspoon coarse sugar, optional for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lightly flour your work surface and gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet.
- Roll the pastry just enough to smooth the seams and even out the thickness.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter or a knife to cut out heart shapes from the puff pastry.
- Place the pastry hearts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
- Add the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest, and mix until creamy and well combined.
- Fold in the finely chopped fresh strawberries and strawberry jam until evenly distributed.
- Using a small knife, lightly score a smaller heart inside each puff pastry heart, leaving about a ½-inch border.
- Prick the centers inside the scored heart a few times with a fork to keep them from puffing too much.
- Spoon a small mound of the strawberry cream cheese filling into the center of each heart, staying inside the scored border.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk or cream to make an egg wash.
- Brush the exposed pastry edges with the egg wash.
- Sprinkle the edges lightly with coarse sugar if using.
- Bake the danishes for 15–18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden and the filling is set.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the danishes cool for a few minutes.
- Transfer the danishes to a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Dust the tops with powdered sugar before serving.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently in the oven or air fryer.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh strawberries.
- You can substitute the cream cheese with mascarpone for a different flavor.
